Dog Leashes

Having a dog leash for your pet is not always the restrictive tool that many pet owners once believed. We have become a society that admires freedom, and yet becomes litigation happy at the earliest onset of perceivable harm. For this reason, it is vital that you invest in a secure dog leash that you can use to help restrain your pet.

First of all, you should know that even if you are opposed to restraining your pet, there are many very good reasons to do so. For one, your pet will learn discipline and be trained properly through the use of an effective leash restraint system.

Furthermore, it is good to restrain your dog so that it does not run away or bother those around you. If your dog either runs away or causes harm to people or property, then you are personally libel for whatever damage he may cause.

There are two main types of leashes that you can use when restraining your dog. The first, most traditional leash fits securely to the collar around the dog’s neck and head. Dog identification tags can be attached to this leash. Using a simply hook device, the leash will hook into the collar of the pet.

Many pet owners prefer not to use the neck leash because they worry about the tightness of the collar hurting the pet. The leash also does not allow for adequate control over the pet, as it directs the pet only through the neck.

Conversely, the more modern leash that fits around the dog’s body is a popular alternative to the neck leash. This type of leash makes it easy to manipulate the animal without worrying that you are causing discomfort by pulling on his neck. The chest leash is, however, more difficult to attach to the dog, especially if it is new for him.

Many pet owners like to use retractable leashes so that the pet can run somewhat free, even during walks. When a car or person approaches, the pet owner can pull the leash tighter, bringing the dog closer to the pet owner for more control.

Keep in mind that when holding the leash, it is important that you refrain from wrapping the leash around your fingers, even if you have a small dog. When your dog becomes excited, he may run forward, exerting more force on your fingers than they are prepared to handle. In fact, one of the most common injuries caused by dogs is to their owners during walks in which a leash is the restraint system. Walk carefully!
